Akiba (Oklahoma City, OK)

Genre:Pop

Self described as "Faint pop songs traveling across time and space", Akiba is a new flavor of pop music hailing from Oklahoma City, OK. Akiba's full length LP, coming Spring 2016 has been described by an advanced listener as "somber but energetic power pop". Taking influence from bands like CHVRCHES, Purity Ring, Sleigh Bells, and Neon Indian, the band's sound is incredibly dynamic because of their use of electronics. That in addition to female lead vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, helps give Akiba a large array of different sounds. The result is an incredibly dynamic electronic power-pop group that has been making waves in the mid-west through energetic live shows supporting acts like Peelander-Z and Crying. The band formed in late 2013 when longtime friends Kevin McPherson and Garland Moore decided to form a new band with only the idea of "pop" in mind. When the two played with Timmer Geurin, the band began to come to life. Later joined by lead vocalist, Nina Mangano, the band has been playing all over Oklahoma. Akiba grew a niche online following from their only release, a demo of the song "Alan Kulwicki". Their demo became popular among fellow electronic musicians and online music communities following its inclusion in the 2014 "CHAO GARDEN" compilation. Since 2014, the band has been hard at work creating a ten song full length LP, produced by Connor Schmigle of the Oklahoma City band Tonne. The band plans to release the album in late spring/early summer 2016. Akiba is excited to be making their SXSW debut in 2016.
