YACHT (Western American Utopian Triangle)

Genre:Pop

We are Jona Bechtolt and Claire L. Evans, and we perform and make music, as well as objects, events, texts, video, products, websites, and other miscellaneous things.Like our new album, 'I Thought The Future Would Be Cooler' (Downtown Records), which is out now after nearly four years in the making. You can order access to digital files that contain it if you like. We couldn’t be more excited about this one. We’ve been doing all kinds of projects around its release, like sending people faxes and making drone videos—you can browse them all here ⇨ ITTFWBC.com.We live in Los Angeles, California, but we both grew up in Portland, Oregon, and consider Marfa, Texas to be our spiritual home. These three places come together to form what we’ve lovingly referred to as the Western American Utopian Triangle. We’ve made six full-length albums of music and a handful of singles, the bulk of which have been released by DFA Records. The previous releases were on a label called Marriage Records. Our first album was released on States Rights Records, an incubator for music by the likes of Lucky Dragons, White Rainbow, Jib Kidder, and more. These days we’re hanging out with Downtown Records.YACHT started as Jona’s solo venture in 2002, only to double in size when Claire joined in 2008. Since 2010 YACHT’s live performances have included our very best friend Bobby Birdman as a player, collaborator, and irreplaceable addition to the enterprise. In all its incarnations, YACHT has been incredibly fortunate to tour around the world both alone and with bands that may well have introduced you to us. Some of our favorite tourmates have been: LCD Soundsystem, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Architecture in Helsinki, Dirty Projectors, Vampire Weekend, The Postal Service, and Chairlift. We’ve made remixes for Snoop Dogg, Kings of Leon, Phoenix, Neon Indian, Stereolab, RATATAT, Classixx, and many more. We love making these. We’re usually up to something, and it’s not always music. We have a line of sunglasses. We built an app, called 5 Every Day, that tells you five interesting things to do in Los Angeles every day. Claire is a writer and science fiction editor, and her work is all over the internet. Start Googling and you’ll find lots more seemingly unrelated projects and ephemera. It’s all related.
